Meet Josh Cooperman
Hello. I’m Josh Cooperman, proud to serve on the Louisville City Council representing Ward 1. When I filed to run, my daughter Calla asked, “Why?” I answered, “To make the world better for you.” That’s still my guiding purpose—and why I’m running for re-election.
This past year, Louisville made real strides. I co-lead efforts to revitalize downtown, support local businesses, and secure CHIPS Zone designation for tech growth. We passed policies to reduce wildfire risk, expand housing options like ADUs, eliminate outdated parking minimums, and preserve historic sites. As a member of the Finance Committee, I help ensure responsible stewardship of our city’s budget, and I represent Louisville on CC4CA, advocating for bold climate policy statewide.
Looking ahead, I’m focused on expanding affordable housing, supporting business growth, and investing in pedestrian and bike infrastructure—from safe trails and crossings to charging stations. I’m committed to restoring our open spaces, caring for our parks and keeping our streets and neighborhoods safe. With resilience grants, walkable hubs, and improved emergency planning, we’re building a city that’s sustainable, safe, and future-ready.
My wife Aubryn’s work at the National Renewable Energy Lab brought us to Louisville, and we quickly fell in love with its welcoming spirit, walkable Old Town, and strong schools. We’ve made our home in Ward 1, and our daughters attend Louisville Elementary.
Before joining Council, I served on the Sustainability Advisory Board, founded the Louisville Sustainability Alliance, and volunteered for campaigns supporting open space, infrastructure, and food access. Running for mayor in 2023, I deepened my connection to this community which fueled my successful Council run.
I grew up near Philadelphia and studied physics—earning degrees from Williams College, Cambridge, and UC Davis. I’ve taught and researched across the U.S. and Europe. I bring analytical thinking and evidence-based decision-making to everything I do including City Council. Louisville is where I’ve found my civic home.
I fill my days with tutoring students, co-parenting my kids, and serving our community with heart and purpose.
I can’t do all this alone, so I am asking for your help - please donate now or volunteer. Thank you.
